the science of nostalgia
i get really psyched on the phenomenon that is nostalgia. i like reading about it, talking about it and making work about it. i find the ways in which scent and sound act as triggers for nostalgia in the brain totally fascinating. turns out eric’s focus of study as a scientist is the evolution of the brain. i just hit the jackpot in late night bar conversation. the one aspect of nostalgia...

everyone speaks english and things feel a little ‘too easy’
drinking has now been ruined for me. there are outdoor cafes and squares everywhere, in which you can purchase a beer for about $2 or less and you don’t tip. i could move...

the first forty two hours
thursday
i left work a ball of nerves, with a hug goodbye from taylor, i was off. arrived at sfo’s new T2 terminal way too early. heed my advice future travelers - do not turn up at this terminal with time to spare and a bellyto feed. the restaurant options are a little too good and you will pay for it. i was first excited by cat cora’s eatery (hey, i watch the food network) but...

buying tickets to Ljubljana
Today we bought tickets to Slovenia. Sarah asked the woman at the counter for the schedule to Ljubljana, and she gave us a schedule of trains to Vienna. Eric said “not Vienna, Ljubljana, we want to go to Ljubljana”.
The woman seemed VERY irritated, and nodded that she understood. We reiterated that we needed to go to Ljubljana, she said “yes yes” and sort of sighed in...

On Poland
Poland seems like the most “Eastern European” country that I have been to. Krakow is the most spectacular city I have ever been to. More to come on this, with pictures.
A couple of notes though (not all positive)
Eric made me laugh so hard tonight that mojito (a surprisingly popular drink in Poland) came out of my nose. What did he say? It was a joke about Primo Levi (you had to be there).

Vilnius to Warsaw
I havent stayed any place with a good internet connection the last couple of days, so I have not been able to upload any pictures.
Yesterday we went to Trakai - a town with an island castle lake that was the capital of Lithuania in the 1400s. There are 150 people there who are part of a Jewish sect that speaks Turkish and makes these little pizza pocket looking things called kybynlar.
Today we...

Icelandic
I landed in Helsinki last night at 11:00 - 10 hours later than expected. When I arrived, I found that the hotel the airline had promised me did not exist, nor did they have any representatives in Helsinki.
With the help of my mother - an angry call placed to Icelandair in Boston
Sarah - finding me what quite literally may have been the last available room in Helsinki
Eric - bringing me a...

workin' my way to Estonia
I’m in Copenhagen.
My flight from Dulles was delayed 2 hours. We then were told that we were going to “try to take off between these two thunderstorms”. Ahem. The flight was rough, rough I tell you. At one point I think I saw Jon Lithgow shooting at the wing, each of my ambien took 10 miligrams of valium, the turbulence had to be warned that WE were coming.
Anyway, I missed...
