in an aeroplane over the sea

notes on budapest

  1. goulash for breakfast - BRILLIANT
  2. there are wedding dress shops on every block. what are the politics of location here? *need to look this up later
  3. everyone speaks english and things feel a little ‘too easy’
  4. drinking has now been ruined for me. there are outdoor cafes and squares everywhere, in which you can purchase a beer for about $2 or less and you don’t tip. i could move here just for this.
  5. the people, language, markets, smells and culture remind me of ukrainian village, the chicago neighborhood i inhabited from 2004-2005ish. it’s hard to belive that i am somewhere foreign until i take a closer look…
  6. physical evidence still remains in buildings, scars of the battle of budapest, in the form of soviet bullet holesĀ
  7. pop culture wise, the city’s fashion and music appears wildly outdated to my western eye.
  8. stumbled across a lake art gallery. LOVE LOVE LOVE. you need to hop in a boat and paddle your way around the art pieces. set in front of a castle that was [only] built just over 100 years ago for a fair. no one has ever lived in it and it now houses an agriculture museum.
  9. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited budapest on monday. in an attempt to avoid public protest, the hungarian government called all tibetan immigrants to some sort of ‘meeting’, fluff to merely keep them distracted during the prime minister’s vist. more on that
